All Venues
390 Grand Ave., Carlsbad, CA 92008 760/729-2989 If you're
looking to shoot some stick in Carlsbad, this is the place for you.
The Boar Cross'n features five tables, all well maintained. There's
ample room to shoot, and two bars stand ready to satisfy even the
most demanding pool shark. The Cross'n features a small stage and
dance floor for the occasional loud cover band that graces the
stage. When you go, you'll be surrounded by the 18-30 crowd. Be
forewarned: the place is simple, with no beers on tap, some padded
seats and few drink specials. The Boar Cross'n is located right next
to Coyote's. There's parking next door, but allow time to find
parking on weekend nights.
94th Aero Squadron
8885 Balboa Avenue, San Diego, CA 92123 858/560-6771 Two
thoughts that don't usually go together: fun and World War I. But
they sure do fit nicely at 94th Aero Squadron. This place is
decorated with so many sandbags and vintage WWI memorabilia you'd
swear you were in a bunker. Patrons can even don headsets and listen
in on the air traffic flying in to Montgomery Field. The restaurant
has a full bar with an outdoor patio that opens during warmer
weather.
Albie's
1201 Hotel Circle South, San Diego, CA 92108 619/291-1103
Situated next to the Travelodge hotel lobby is a funky piano bar
called Albie's Beef Inn. Albie's is one part piano bar, one part
beef restaurant. Wrap around the wood-lined entrance, and you step
into a scene reminiscent of the Playboy Mansion circa 1950. The
lights are dim, the mirrors speckled, and the oil paintings hanging
on the wall are all nudes. An accomplished pianist tickles the
ivories Tuesday through Saturday. The music consists of a full
repertoire of old-school songs. There's plenty of parking in the
front of this Mission Valley establishment. From Interstate 8, look
for the Travelodge. To find Albie's, pretend like you're checking
into the lobby, and just veer to the right.
Blarney Stone Pub (Clairemont)
5617 Balboa Ave., San Diego, CA 92111 858/279-2033 Located
within blocks of the Department of Motor Vehicles, the Blarney Stone
Pub welcomes young and old inside its painted brick walls. Yes, it's
in the middle of a strip mall, but one step inside and you don't
care. The Blarney Stone plays home to neighborhood folks, who would
rather poke their thumb in the eye than head to the Gaslamp Blarney
Stone for a pint o' Guinness. The crowd here can get rowdy,
especially when the darts begin flying. If you're worried about
parking, don't be. It's a mall!
Boar's Cross'n

Buffalo Joe's
00 Fifth Ave., San Diego, CA 92101 619/233-2678 Dont let the
name fool you into thinking this is a western joint. Buffalo Joe's
is anything but. If you are a child of the 80's and actually
remember Izod shirts, check out 80 Sumthin on Friday nights. They
have mastered the great 80s classics. Plan on getting there early
because the line will wrap around the corner. While you're waiting,
peoplewatch through the large, open windows.
Buster Daly's
3112 University Ave., San Diego, CA 92104 619/284-2747 From the
moment you step on the green carpet, Buster Daly's sucks you in. The
mainstay beers, Guinness and Harp, are on tap. The dartboard and
pool tables are here, as well. But unlike most Irish pubs, you'll
find a jukebox along the side, along with well-priced drinks. On
that special night, you may even find the occasional Celtic group
taking its place on stage, albeit a tiny one.
Dick's Last Resort
345 Fourth Ave., San Diego, CA 92101 Info phone: 619/231-9100
If you've never been, let's sum up the "Resort" this way: attitude
with a vengeance. Everyone at the joint, from the hostess that
glares at you to the bartenders making fun of you, is brimming with
attitude. Study up on snappy comebacks and one-liners, because
you'll need 'em. Drink specials are plentiful, and the buffalo wings
don't just hit the spot, they pummel it. Dick's often hosts downtown
block parties, and also makes a fine place to watch sporting events
on several big TVs. Dick's has entrances on both Fourth and Fifth
Ave. The bar spans an entire city block. Parking's difficult in the
Gaslamp, and forget about valet parking (it's just not that kind of
place). |
