Beach House
2530 S. Highway 101, San Diego, CA 92007 Info phone:
760/753-1321 For some, the Beach House conjures up images of a
restaurant in Cardiff's Restaurant Row being pummeled by pounding
surf. Not long ago, it looked like the Pacific was going to reclaim
the Beach House. But the water receded, and the Beach House was left
intact. It's a good thing. The food at the Beach House is great.
Since the restaurant and bar are perched right next to the water,
the views make this one of the best viewpoints in North County. Up
top, the heated Top of the House provides a full bar and hosts some
terrific groups.
Belly Up
143 S. Cedros Ave., Solana Beach, CA 92075 858/481-8140 The
Belly Up's ambiance gives you the impression that you are in the
belly of a big ship, but the name was a tongue-in-cheek decision
made by the owner during the '70s — he wondered how long it would
take for the club to go "belly up." Fortunately, the answer appears
to be "a very long time." This Solana Beach music venue and bar has
a capacity of 600. The stage is low to the ground, and the acoustics
are terrific. So is the dance floor — get up close to the bands, and
know there is always ample room to move and groove. A full bar and
hangar-like atmosphere also helps. Parking is available in a lot and
on the street. Dress is casual. For hungry folks, The Wild Note Cafe
on the premises has great salads and other dishes. Be sure to
explore the surrounding Cedros Ave. design district for the full
experience.
Boar's Cross'n
390 Grand Ave., Carlsbad, CA 92008 760/729-2989 If you're
looking to shoot some stick in Carlsbad, this is the place for you.
The Boar Cross'n features five tables, all well maintained. There's
ample room to shoot, and two bars stand ready to satisfy even the
most demanding pool shark. The Cross'n features a small stage and
dance floor for the occasional loud cover band that graces the
stage. When you go, you'll be surrounded by the 18-30 crowd. Be
forewarned: the place is simple, with no beers on tap, some padded
seats and few drink specials. The Boar Cross'n is located right next
to Coyote's. There's parking next door, but allow time to find
parking on weekend nights.
En Fuego Cantina & Grill
1342 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92104 Info phone: 858/792-6551
By day, this Mexican-style restaurant hosts tourists meandering by
to grab lunch or dinner. But as the sun goes down, locals begin to
come out of the woodwork and head to this subterranean party. On
Fridays and Saturdays, the singles scene explodes, especially when
tequila is thrown into the mix. The main bar gets so busy that
people spill over on to the outdoor patio, obscured from the street
by palms and trees. You can park out front, but look for a lot out
back and side street parking.
Enoteca del Fornaio
1555 Camino Del Mar, Del Mar, CA 92014 858/755-8876 Like many
nightspots in Del Mar, Enoteca is blessed with one of the most
breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. Affiliated with the
legendary Il Fornaio restaurant, Enoteca is the outdoor wine bar
perched atop Del Mar Plaza. Enoteca means "library" in Italian and
features a massive selection of California and Italian wines. They
are more than happy to serve you the vintage of your choosing by the
glass or bottle. Enoteca del Fornaio is located right next to
Epazote's. There's free parking for up to 2 hours in the garage
below, and grab your seat early during the warm months for live jazz
shows.
The Crazy Burro
6996 El Camino Real, Carlsbad, CA 92009 Inland of the beach
town that is Carlsbad stands a lone Mexican bar and restaurant,
affectionatly known as The Crazy Burro. The place looks like any
other Mexican restaurant. But their margaritas are awesome, and half
of La Costa knows it. In the outdoor patio, you'll find plenty of
twenty-something socialites toasting to the week that was. Weekends
can get crazy at the Burro, so bring your social skills and enjoy!
Like any good nightspot, the Burro features sweet happy hour deals.
There's usually plenty of parking, so forget about walking far.
